Biomass

Quick-growing wood species provide another renewable energy option for power generation. Two of Minnesota Power’s large paper-producing customers, Sappi Fine Papers in Cloquet, Minn., and UPM Blandin in Grand Rapids, Minn., are powered in part by wood waste generated on site. In addition, Hibbard Renewable Energy Center uses biomass to produce steam for Verso Corp., a paper and pulp mill in Duluth, Minn. All told, the three sites generate about 84 megawatts of renewable energy.

Minnesota Power’s parent company, ALLETE, has entered an agreement to be acquired by a partnership led by Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Global Infrastructure Partners and start the process to become a private company.
