What is an Electronically Commutated Motor (ECM)?

ECM is a brushless DC motor with all of its speed and torque controls built in. This allows the motor to adjust its speed to ensure the optimal airflow at all times. In addition, ECMs are considerably quieter and less expensive to operate than conventional furnace fans.

What is an ECM Circulator?

If you use a boiler to heat your home, you most likely have circulators (pumps) to distribute the water. When choosing a circulator, look for one that offers ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor) technology. Circulators used for hydronic and radiant heating systems continue to become more energy efficient thanks to ECM technology. The intelligent speed control these circulators provide can drastically reduce energy usage when compared to the conventional, static speed technology.

When in operation, conventional circulator pumps operate at constant output, regardless of the system’s demand. Not only does this use more electricity than required, it can have negative effects on boiler performance.
