Lignite - Our Regional Resource: Energy, Economics & Environment
June 19-21, 2007

Registration | Itinerary | Additional Information & Teacher Resources

Minnesota Power is once again pleased to offer teachers from our service area the opportunity to attend a three-day seminar about the Upper Midwest's lignite coal industry which will be held this summer at Bismarck State College, Bismarck, ND. The seminar is open to Elementary & Secondary Teachers from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana, North Dakota & South Dakota.

One semester graduate credit available

Minnesota Power will pay the tuition and ground transportation expenses for ten teachers to attend the seminar titled Lignite - Our Regional Resource: Energy, Economics and Environment on June 19-21, 2007.

The seminar is designed to provide Upper Midwest teachers the opportunity to learn about the important role North Dakota's lignite energy industry plays in the region's economy. The seminar, which focuses on how coal is mined and converted into energy for use by millions of consumers and businesses in the region, include tours of a lignite mine, a lignite-fired power plant and the Great Plains Synfuels Plant.

What Teachers Have To Say About the Seminar...

" I now have a much better realization of literally thousands of factors (and expenses) that go into turning coal into electricity, synthetic natural gas, and other usable products."

" In my 13 years of teaching, this was easily the most worthwhile and interesting summer workshop I have ever attended."

Teachers from all grade levels will be accepted in the program but top consideration will be given to those who teach subjects such as earth science, social studies and energy education. Teachers that are selected to attend the seminar will be notified by letter within two weeks after the application deadline. Those selected will then be required to send in a $60 deposit. The check will be held and returned to you when you register for the seminar June 19, 2007. If for some reason you are unable to attend, you must forfeit your deposit.

The application deadline is March 30, 2007. If you or anyone at your school has questions about the seminar, please give me a call.
