About the Area
Summarized in two words: God's country. Upper Minnesota contains a bounty of natural wonders, from a million-acre national forest, to hundreds of scenic lakes, the popular Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness and the spectacular North Shore of Lake Superior with its sheer cliffs and wondrous waterfalls.
Minnesota Power's service territory takes in 26,000 square miles of a region rich in natural resources. For generations, the company has generated and distributed electricity to power the wood products and paper industries as well as several energy-intense taconite plants in the area. Taconite, an iron-bearing rock, is abundant in northern Minnesota and is a source of raw material used in steel making. The electric utility operates several installations in Upper Minnesota, including steam generation power plants in Hoyt Lakes, Grand Rapids and Taconite Harbor as well as numerous smaller hydropower facilities alongside the region's many waterways. Our energy-trading center is located in downtown Minneapolis. Other company facilities are located around Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin.
First-class educational institutions - both public and private, primary and secondary - are a priority here. The robust transportation network includes an international airport, great highways and a world-class port at Duluth connected to the St. Lawrence Seaway. Quality of life is abundantly important to the employees of Energy Services. Our region boasts unparalleled hunting and fishing, water sports of all kinds, Nordic and Alpine skiing, world-class golf and renowned trails for hiking, biking and snowmobiling.
