Siding & Roofing

The use of metal for siding and roofing in home construction continues to increase. Aesthetically, it's clean and sleek looking, and it comes in a variety of shapes and colors. Other advantages of modern steel roofing and siding include easy installation, longevity, exceptional durability and energy savings.

Roofing

The roofing used for the Millennium Star home is a made of 22 gauge standing seam steel. The unique UNA-CLAD patented design is a self-locking system that is fastened without the use of clips and allows for thermal movement. It has an attractive dark green Hylar paint coating.

A steel roof was chosen for several reasons:

  • A steel roof will last up to 100 years compared to an asphalt shingle roof lasting between 20 and 25 years.
  • Steel from a metal roof can be recycled. Asphalt shingles are placed in a landfill.
  • Its smooth surface is designed to shed snow and ice and it's highly resistant to damage from wind or storms.
  • Metal reflects most of the sun's rays and cools more quickly at the end of the day. Asphalt shingles absorb energy and retain heat, requiring more energy to maintain a cooler living space in the summer months.

The initial cost of metal is higher. A steel roof usually costs two to three times more than asphalt shingles. Considering metal's increased life span and the fact that it's virtually maintenance-free, the life-cycle costs of metal are lower than conventional roofing materials.

Siding

The siding on the Millennium Star home is 29-gauge seamless steal in a driftwood gray color. It comes in a continuous rolled stock that's 1 ½ - 2 feet in wide. The lengths of steel are attached to the house with about a 3-inch lap.

Advantages of steel siding include:

  • Lifetime warranty
  • Low maintenance
  • No rusting or chipping
