Home Energy Analysis (HEA) with Building Diagnostics
pyramid

What is it?

Building diagnostics takes a traditional Home Energy Analysis to the next level by adding blower door testing and infrared thermal scans to identify air leaks and reduced insulation levels in your home. If two or more items from the list below apply to your home, you may be a candidate for HEA with Building Diagnostics and could begin identifying ways to improve the comfort and energy efficiency of your home.

  • cold drafts in winter
  • sweaty windows in winter
  • uneven temperatures between rooms
  • heating system does not keep home comfortable
  • cooling system does not keep home comfortable
  • ice dams

You will receive a personalized report detailing an implementation plan for improving the overall energy effectiveness of your home. The auditor can also prepare a quote for doing the work specified or can refer you to a weatherization contractor. The auditor will also provide information about rebates and loans available from other organizations.

How do I participate?

  1. Complete the Your Home Energy Report (YHER) Survey. If an HEA is indicated and you answer yes to two or more of the above questions, an HEA with Building Diagnostics may be right for you.

  2. Contact a participating building diagnostics auditor to request a cost estimate for the HEA with Building Diagnostics. Because cost of the service varies by degree of analysis, level of expertise, the age of home and travel distance, it is advisible to contact a few of the participating auditors for a price quote.

  3. Once you select a participating auditor, work with him or her to schedule a time to complete the HEA with Building Biagnostics. Please allow for up to four hours.

  4. You will be required to pay the auditor for his or her services. The auditor will fill out the required paperwork for you to qualify for a rebate on the HEA with Building Diagnostics ($100 rebate for non-electrically heated homes or $200 rebate for electrically heated homes). Duluth residents may qualify for additional rebates through ComfortSystems (218-730-4025) and/or Duluth Energy Efficiency Program (DEEP) (218-336-1038).

  5. Customers with electricity as the primary heat source may also qualify for an additional $200 rebate for air sealing the home. Please talk with your participating auditor to discuss if this is right for you and your home.
