Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) Rebates

An air source heat pump (ASHP) is an energy-efficient alternative to a furnace and central air conditioner or ductless electric heating with window air conditioner. It is an attractive option because it is capable of providing efficient cooling, along with heating in the spring and fall, with a single unit.

ASHPs typically work well in temperatures as low as 30 degrees F. Below this temperature, an additional heating source is required. This backup system could be electric, fossil fuel or both.

Because ASHPs use electricity to transfer energy between indoor and outdoor air for heating and cooling, they deliver 1½ to 3 times more energy to a home than the electric energy consumed. This means for every unit of energy you put in, you get 2 to 3 units in return. For more information on ASHPs, look at these FAQs.

Air Source Heat Pump Rebate Program Requirements
Minnesota Power and participating municipal utilities are offering a rebate on qualifying mini split ductless and qualifying standard split, furnace integrated air source heat pumps in new and existing homes from March 1, 2009 through February 28, 2010. The ASHP rebate is available for homes with a forced air, ducted (ductwork) system (Standard Split, furnace integrated system) and homes with no ducts (Mini Split ductless systems).

The rebate varies from $300 to $500, depending on the type of system installed. To qualify for these rebates, the unit must be installed by a program trained contractor, meet energy efficiency standards, and electricity must be a primary heating source. You will need a backup system, which could be a fossil fuel furnace, electric baseboard/radiant or in-floor slab heating, and electric furnace or boiler system.

The program trained contractor will work with you to design a system that meets these rebate requirements and supports the distribution system (ductwork or ductless) requirements of your home.
