Save & Benefit

Minnesota Power is always exploring new ways to spread the word about energy conservation. We’ve developed a new school-based program that educates students about how to save energy, while raising funds for school projects.

These events are designed to build community awareness about the economic and environmental benefits of replacing incandescent light bulbs, lamps, and fixtures with energy-efficient, ENERGY STAR qualifying compact fluorescent light (CFLs) bulbs, lighting fixtures, and lamps.

“Learn and Earn was a wonderful project for our school and communities. The program allowed students from the National Honor Society to go into the classroom and interact with students, learn about energy conservation and promote CFL light bulbs. It was an all around great experience ” -

Minnesota Power is happy to announce its 2008 schedule for the School-based Fundraiser and Energy Education Events. Schools can earn between $1.00 and $5.00 per qualifying product (up to a total of $5,000) sold at designated retailers during a prescribed period of time. Schools are encouraged to submit a request for proposal to participate in one of five events planned for 2008. Minnesota Power will select at least one school for each of the 2 time periods listed below:

October, 2008 (proposals must be submitted by May 1 to be considered)
November, 2008 (proposals must be submitted by June 1 to be considered)

Selected schools can provide a valuable service to the community and at the same time raise money for school activities and educate students about the value of energy conservation.

It has been a valuable experience for schools in Cloquet, Greenway, International Falls, Hermantown, Little Falls, Crosby-Ironton, Eveleth-Gilbert, Aurora Hoyt Lakes, Biwabik, Chisholm, Long Prairie/Grey Eagle and Park Rapids..

These schools raised over $28,000 and helped save over 2,000,000 kwh, enough energy to power 172 homes for a year. This amount of energy saved also results in a positive carbon impact by avoiding emission of about 1,800 tons of carbon dioxide.
