Why it’s Happening
Through a process called a “rate case”, we’ve asked the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) for permission to increase electric base rates by 9.7 percent to cover investments—in cleaner energy in plant and systems upgrades—and operating cost increases.
It’s the first base rate increase in 14 years. We also expect that, due to state and federal mandates, necessary upgrades and increased production costs, rates will continue to rise for the next several years.
We know that isn’t welcome news. Here’s what’s behind it.
