Description:
Height: 8-10'
Width: 6-8'
Hardiness Zone: 3b
Upright oval shaped large shrub or can be trained
into a small tree. Foliage is comprised of three leaflets of medium
green color. The dark gray bark is smooth and striped. The plants
flower in late May or early June with white flowers in hanging clusters.
Individual flowers are about 1/2" long. Plants are native in
the Upper Midwest from Minnesota eastward. The fruits are 3 lobed,
inflated bladder-like capsules. This is a plant that could be used
much more as a border plant or trained as a small tree. Tends to grow
as a shrubby mass from sucker growth. Requirements
and Culture:
Prefers a rich, moist soil. Can be grown in
full sun or light shade.
Requires pruning to remove suckers unless a mass planting is desired.
Limitations:
Not very drought tolerant. No serious insect or disease problems. Tends to sucker and re-seed readily. Not usually available in the nursery trade.
