Siberian Peashrub is an upright shrub that
can be trained into a small tree. It has showy yellow pea like flowers
that appear in late May. Bark of the trunk and stems retain a greenish
color for several years. The small leaflets of the pinnately compound
leaves are medium green in color. Often used as a windbreak or tall
informal hedge.
Requirements and Culture:
Needs full sun and a well drained soil for
good performance. Requires little maintenance. Very tolerant of
drought, cold winter temperatures, and poor soil conditions. Has
good tolerance to alkaline soils and deicing salt. Not bothered
by rabbits.
Limitations:
Not tolerant of poorly drained soils. Susceptible to leaf spot diseases,
blister beetles and red spider mites which leads to poor foliage
quality in mid to late summer. This species has limited ornamental
qualities, but is valuable for planting in difficult growing conditions.
Selected Cultivars:
'Sutherland'- has a more
narrow, upright form.
C. microphylla'Tidy'- is
a compact variety with smaller leaves than that of C. arborescens.
