Outstanding Features:
Attractive yellow to purple fall color.
Description:
Height: 40-70'
Width: 20-50'
Hardiness Zone: 4a
White Ash is an excellent landscape tree
in sites where it is adapted. It has an upright oval form, developing
a rounded crown. Leaves are pinnately compound with 59 (usually
7) leaflets. Leaves are dark green with a lighter underside. Fall
color develops early and ranges from yellow to redpurple.
Native from east central Minnesota eastward.
Requirements and Culture:
Prefers a rich, well drained soil and ample
moisture. Adaptable to a wide range of soil pH. Full sun. White
Ash is fairly salt tolerant. Bark tissues on the trunks of young,
rapidly growing trees harden off very late in the season. This can
result in severe winter injury in years with extreme cold temperatures
early in the winter. To help prevent this problem it's best not
to encourage rapid growth on young trees.
Limitations:
Not very drought tolerant. Susceptible to ash yellows, a mycoplasma-like
organism that may become a serious problem. Susceptible to borers
when under stress. Ash flower gall on male flowers can be unattractive.
Selected Cultivars:
`Autumn Blaze' - is a new cultivar introduced
by the Morden Manitoba Experiment Station. It has an oval crown
and develops a good purple fall color. Winter hardy in zone 3b.
`Autumn Purple' has a good round oval
crown and develops an excellent maroon to purple fall color.
`Manitou' - has a narrow oval form with an
upright branching habit. Does not develop a good fall color.
`Skyline' - has a symmetrical oval form with
glossy green leaves. Good street tree.
