Outstanding Features:
Fast growing and adaptable to drought and
poor soil.
Description:
Height: 40-60'
Width: 30-50'
Hardiness Zone: 3a
Green Ash has a broad range and is native
throughout the upper midwest. It is very commonly used in the landscape
since its adaptability allows it to survive in many sites including
street plantings and in parking lots. It has an oval to round crown,
becoming somewhat irregular and spreading with age. The medium green
leaves are pinnately compound with 79 leaflets. Fall color
is often nondescript but can become an attractive clear yellow
under good conditions. Green Ash grows quite rapidly, especially
when planted in a favorable site.
Requirements and Culture:
Well adapted to a broad range of soil conditions.
Very drought tolerant and salt tolerant. Full sun. Easily transplanted
and rapidly becomes re-established. Prune to improve form. Select
seedless cultivars to avoid problem of weedy seedlings.
Limitations:
Usually not seriously bothered by insect or disease problems but
can be attacked by borers if under stress. Ash yellows (a mycoplasma-like
organism) is now showing up as a possible serious threat. The form
of Green Ash tends to become unattractive with age. Susceptible
to ash flower gall on male flowers. The feeding of ash plant bug
can mar the foliage.
Selected Cultivars:
Many seedless cultivars are available. The
following are well adapted in the upper midwest.

upright oval crown with a straight trunk. It is a rapid growing,
