Winterberry is an attractive shrub that is
native in boggy sites in Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. It has
glossy, dark green leaves of medium texture. Fruit are frequently
abundant along the stem on female plants providing an excellent
show in the fall. Fruit color is orange to red. The fruit is very
attractive to birds.
Requirements and Culture:
Requires a moist soil and prefers an acid
soil although tolerant of neutral soils. Prefers full sun but tolerates
light shade. Will grow well in wet soil near ponds or streams. Needs
male plant with comparable bloom dates for pollination to produce
a good fruit set on female plants.
Limitations:
Becomes chlorotic in alkaline soils. Some plants susceptible to
leaf spot diseases.
Selected Cultivars:
'Aurantiaca'- has masses
of bright, medium sized orange fruit. Susceptible to leaf spot.
'Afterglow'- has bright
medium sized, red-orange fruit. Fruits abundantly.
'Shaver'- compact habit
with large, red fruit. Is quite resistant to leaf spot.
'Cacapon'- has bright red
medium sized fruit.
