Hardiness Zone: 4a but varies with cultivar.
A broad columnar tree form is typical for
the species. However there are many cultivars which vary from very
wide spreading shrub forms to columnar tree forms. Foliage color
ranges from clear green to bluish or grayish green. Plants are dioecious,
with females producing berry like cones. Cones are dark blue or
brown with a white bloom.
Requirements and Culture:
Requires a well drained soil in a sunny location.
Adaptable to different soil pH; tolerates fairly alkaline soils.
Limitations:
Susceptible to red spider mites. Some cultivars are occasionally
susceptible to winter browning.
Selected Cultivars:
'Ames'- has a broad upright
growth habit growing to 8-10 ft. Has excellent foliage quality with
dark green needles.
'Hetzii'- has ascending
branches to 15 ft. in height and spread if not pruned. Silvery blue
foliage and showy fruits.
'Maneyi'- also has a spreading
habit of growth. It is a little taller, and habit is more upright
than 'Pfitzeriana'. Has blue-green foliage and showy fruit.
'Mountbatten'- has dark
blue-green foliage. Narrow, pyramidal plant habit to 15 ft. tall.
'Pfitzeriana'- is a commonly
used spreading juniper. Can reach 6 ft. in height and 8 - 10ft.
in width.
