Description:
Height: 15-20'+
Width: 6-8'
Hardiness Zone: 3b
Eastern Red Cedar is native throughout the
upper midwest. Foliage varies in shades of green. Foliage usually
develops a purple to brownish cast during winter months. Trees are
pyramidal in shape. Typical trees of the species are much larger
and less dense in growth habit than are the selected cultivars that
are usually planted in landscape situations. Sexes are separate.
The blue fruits on female trees can add color to the trees when
mature.
Requirements and Culture:
Requires full sun and a well drained soil
for best results. Becomes quite open and leggy in shade. Adaptable
to a wide range of soil pH. Tolerates dry, rocky soil.
Limitations:
Susceptible to cedar-apple rust. Serves as the alternate host for
this disease which can then affect apple, crabapple and hawthorn
trees.
Selected Cultivars:
'Canaertii' - has a pyramidal
form with bright green foliage.
'Hillii' - pyramidal form
turning purplish in winter.
