Outstanding Features:
Good form for use as specimen or shade tree
in landscapes. Clean dark green foliage.
Description:
Height: 40-60'
Width: 30-50'
Hardiness Zone: 4a
Norway Maple is an attractive landscape tree
that is tolerant of urban conditions. It has a round to broad oval
crown and is very dense. It has large, dark green five lobed leaves
which remain in good condition throughout the growing season. The
foliage remains green later than most other deciduous trees and
may turn a clear yellow in the fall. Numerous showy clusters of
bright greenish yellow flowers appear in the spring.
Requirements and Culture:
Requires full sun. Prefers a good, rich loam
soil. More tolerant to drought, summer heat, and soil alkalinity
than Sugar Maple. It has good midwinter cold hardiness. However,
because of a tendency to harden slowly in the fall, young trees
can suffer winter trunk injury in years with severe early winter
cold.
Limitations:
No serious insect problems. Verticillium wilt can be a problem,
especially in sites with compacted soil. Trunks of young trees frequently
suffer sun-scald injury. Norway Maple casts dense shade and it is
difficult to grow turf underneath low branching specimens.
Selected Cultivars:
`Cleveland' - a fast growing
cultivar with a dense, symmetrical upright oval crown. `Columnare'
- has a compact narrow columnar form with ascending branches.
`Crimson King' - noted for
its purple foliage which is retained throughout the growing season.
Slower growing than green leaved cultivars. Less cold hardy than
some other cultivars..
`Crimson Sentry' - A bud
sport of `Crimson King' that has a dense, narrow oval crown.
CrystalTM - A
new cultivar that has a straight central leader. Grows rapidly and
branches well as a young tree.
`Deborah' - has reddish new foliage which turns bronze-green as
it matures. It has a broad oval to rounded crown with a strong central
leader.
Emerald LustreTM -
selected by Bailey Nurseries for its vigorous growth and excellent
branching habit as a young tree.
`Emerald Queen' - is an
excellent cultivar with a straight trunk and good branching characteristics.
Has an oval form.
`Globosum' - has a very
dense globe shaped crown. Usually budded on a standard. The very
dense, symmetrical form gives a very formal appearance. Of limited
use in the informal landscape.
`Royal Red' - has reddish
purple foliage throughout the growing season. Has a broad oval crown.
`Schwedleri' - has reddish
purple new foliage turning dark green in summer. Has a broad oval
crown. This is an old cultivar that is now being replaced by `Deborah'
in landscape use.
`Superform' - has a very
symmetrical broad oval to rounded crown.
