Swiss Stone Pine is an extremely attractive
conifer that should be used much more in landscape settings. As a
young tree, it is very conical in form. It is very slow in growth
and remains relatively small. The soft 2-3 inch long needles are found
in bundles of five and are often retained for four or five years.
This species is very resistant to winter browning of the needles.
Makes an excellent evergreen specimen or group planting.
Requirements and Culture:
Requires a well drained soil and needs full sun to develop well. Transplants easily.
Limitations:
Slow rate of growth limits its ease of production. Is a member of the white pine group and therefore susceptible to white pine blister rust. Like all pines, it is not tolerant of poorly drained soils.
Selected Cultivars:
`Columnaris' - has a more narrow columnar
habit than the species.
