Outstanding Features:
A hardy evergreen, tolerant of many adverse conditions.
Description:
Height: 40-60'
Width: 25-40'
Hardiness Zone: 3b
Austrian Pine forms a dense pyramid when young but develops a picturesque spreading crown with age. The needles are dark green, very stiff, 56" long, and are borne in bundles of two. The bark on older trees is quite striking, having light gray ridges with dark brownishblack furrows. Adapts to urban conditions better than most pines.
Requirements and Culture:
Prefers a moist, welldrained soil. Tolerates a wide range of soil pH. One of the more adaptable pines. Full sun. Fairly salt tolerant. Hardiness varies with seed source.
Limitations:
Diplodia tip blight (a fungal disease) can cause severe dieback. Dothistroma needle blight also causes loss of foliage. The pine wood nematode is a potential problem. Occasionally will suffer some winter browning of needles.
