Ponderosa Pine is native throughout western North America. It is one of the major timber tree species. In the landscape, Ponderosa Pine has a broad pyramidal form when young, developing a rounded crown with age. Needles are dark green, very long (58"), and borne in bundles of three or sometimes two. It is used limitedly in landscaping.
Requirements and Culture:
Prefers a moist, well drained loam soil, though it is found growing in many different situations in nature. Fairly tolerant of drought and alkaline soils. Full sun. Fairly salt tolerant.
Limitations:
No major insect or disease problems. Can be affected by Diplodia tip blight.
