Outstanding Features:
Outstanding display of double white flowers in early spring. Extremely fragrant.
Description:
Height: 10-12'
Width: 8-10'
Hardiness Zone: 3a
Princess Kay Plum is an excellent small tree in the landscape. It flowers in early spring with 1" double white flowers that appear before the foliage. The fragrance is very pleasant. Flowers turn pinkish as they age. The tree form is oval with a somewhat open informal branching habit. Foliage is medium green and sometimes develops a reddish-purple fall color in early autumn. Trunk and branches are almost black in color. The broad white horizontal lenticels are quite noticeable against the dark bark. Plant form and branch color add to the winter interest in the landscape.
Requirements and Culture:
Adaptable to a range of soil conditions but not tolerant of poorly drained soils or extremely droughty soils. Requires full sun for good performance. Remove root suckers.
Limitations:
Grow only for landscape effect. Fruit set is sparse and is of poor quality. Fruits frequently are affected by plum pockets disease which causes the fruit to swell and become hollow. Naturally defoliates early in fall ahead of most other deciduous plants. Can develop a suckering root system which is not true to type since plants are budded onto seedling rootstocks.
