Outstanding Features:
Grown for fruit for pies or preserves. Attractive glossy dark green foliage and small tree habit of growth.
Description:
Height: 10-15'
Width: 10-12'
Hardiness Zone: 4a
North Star and Meteor Cherry can be used very attractively in the landscape. They develop into small round headed trees. Leaves are dark green and very glossy. Fall color is a golden-yellow. The white flowers in early spring cover the plant before foliage appears. The bright red fruit add a seasonal beauty as well as their value for fruit. They are very inviting to birds so covering with netting is usually required if you want to harvest the fruit. The smooth dark bark with noticeable white lenticels is very attractive and adds to the winter landscape. 'Meteor' grows somewhat larger than 'North Star'.
Requirements and Culture:
Needs a well drained soil in full sun. Pruning to reduce the tree density improves fruit set and development. Sour cherries are self-fruitful and do not require a cross-pollinator.
Limitations:
Not tolerant of poorly drained soils. Somewhat short lived if grown under heavy grass competition and stress conditions.
